The beauty-from-within category has undergone notable evolution over the past decade. Consumers are no longer satisfied with vague promises of inner nourishment for beauty; they expect traceable pathways of action and verifiable selection criteria.

Research on the gut-skin axis provides a theoretical interface for this demand. The core mechanism can be briefly summarized as: following metabolic transformation by the gut microbiota, certain plant-derived compounds generate metabolites that enter systemic circulation and indirectly participate in the regulation of skin homeostasis. This understanding moves the evaluation of oral beauty efficacy beyond "what is contained" to "what it actually becomes after ingestion."

The following are two types of plant extracts that have garnered sustained attention in the field of oral beauty.

Grape Seed Extract
Grape seed extract is rich in proanthocyanidins and ranks among the better-studied ingredients in this field. Animal studies indicate that proanthocyanidins modulate the proportion of Akkermansia and Lactobacillus in the gut microbiota, while reducing serum lipopolysaccharide levels—a marker of reduced endotoxin translocation and alleviated systemic low-grade inflammation. Concurrent with improvements in inflammatory markers, skin antioxidant capacity increases, reflected in elevated superoxide dismutase activity and decreased malondialdehyde content.

Green Tea Extract
EGCG from green tea provides a research paradigm with stronger causal logic. In mouse models, oral administration of EGCG resulted in very low plasma concentrations of the intact compound, while specific gut microbial metabolites increased significantly and correlated positively with skin inflammation improvement. More importantly, when the gut microbiota was depleted with antibiotics, the skin-improving effect of the same EGCG dose disappeared. This directly demonstrates that EGCG acts through a "microbiota-dependent" mechanism-it does not reach skin targets directly but requires complete microbial transformation to exert its effects.
